37th Annual Gold Cup Invitational Team Fishing Tournament

January 13th-17th, 2009 marked the 37th Gold Team Fishing Tournament. We had 17 boats and 60 Anglers enter the tournament this year.

Day 1 was a successful day; four boats decided to take a lay day and 24 Sailfish were released between the other 13 boats. Also, Brooks Renoll caught our heaviest Dolphin on the Osprey today; weighing 23.5 pounds!

Day 2 was a very competitive day with only 2 boats taking their lay day. Bone Shaker came in strong on their first day out with 4 releases and 1200 points, but Mehl Ticket had a solid day too with 4 releases for the day and took the High Daily Award on time.

Day 3 brought bad weather and half of the boats in the tournament decided to take their lay day. But our winner from last year, “Big Dog” wasn’t going to let the weather stop them! They released 4 fish for the day earning them 1200 points and our High Daily award for Day 3.

Going into Day 4 we had 5 boats fighting for the lead and were only one release away from each other. The weather was perfect and almost every boat caught a fish! There were 20 releases for the day, 18 on dead bait and 2 on live bait. With 4 releases for the day and 10 for the Tournament, Andres Fanjul, and his team aboard Alican captured this year’s 1st Place Team Award!

Overall, this was a very successful and enjoyable tournament. We thank everyone who participated and look forward to continuing the traditions of the Gold Cup in the years to come!

The 52nd Annual Wirth M. Munroe Yacht Race

December 5th marked the 52nd Annual Wirth Munroe Yacht Race from Fort Lauderdale to Palm Beach. We had an impressive 22 boats enter the race; some from as far away as California, Chicago and New York! Perfect weather and 5-10 knot easterly winds combined with moderate seas made for a challenging day of sailing.
After finishing the race, sailors were greeted at the Sailfish Club docks with rum drinks and the relaxing sounds of the Calypso Band, 40 Fathoms and spent the afternoon watching the remaining racers come in. Afterwards, everyone joined together in the main dining room for dinner and the awards ceremony hosted by Yachting Committee Chairman, Dr. Paul Gingras. Everyone had a wonderful time and said that it was the smoothest, most enjoyable Wirth Munroe that they had attended!

The 53rd Annual Wirth Munroe Race will take place Friday, December 4th, 2009
