54th Annual Wirth M. Munroe Yacht Race

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

The 54th Annual Wirth Munroe Yacht Race from Fort Lauderdale to Palm Beach will be on Friday, December 4th. Stay tuned for details.

This year's we faced a challenge that we have never seen in the past; no wind. An amazing 33 boats in four classes managed to start the race 2 hours behind schedule once Mother Nature managed to provide 8 knots of wind.

Once on their way, sailors enjoyed an “easy” sail up the Gulfstream to the Palm Beach Inlet. However, once they reached the Breakers they were welcomed by a fierce squall packed with thunder and lightning. Boats arrived at the club in the pouring rain where they were still welcomed with Rum Punch and beer. It was an eventful day on the ocean, but the clouds did part momentarily which gave crews a chance to gather their things and head inside for cocktails, live music and dinner.

We had four Sailfish Club Yachts enter the race this year, Matt Fifield’s “Ringle”, Tim Givens’ “Chinook Wind”, Alex Roepers’ “Plenty”, and Jim Bishop’s “Gold Digger. This year it was Mr. Roepers’ “Plenty”, racing PHRF, that won 1st Sailfish Club Yacht to Finish, and 1st Sailfish Club Yacht to Finish on Corrected Time. Mr. Roepers was featured in our November Sailfish Lines for his accomplishments in the Farr 40 Worlds in Italy. We would like to thank all members who supported and participated in the Wirth Munroe Race this year and we looked forward to December for the next race!
